Has a thought similar to this crossed your mind? “If I spent 24 hours in this office with no interruptions I could finally catch up.”
With the summer solstice & official start to summer today, the folks north of the Arctic Circle will have 24 hours of daylight. Do you think they should spend all their moments working...or do you think they should leave the office at a reasonable hour and enjoy the special treat?
The following methods could help us all chose the latter:
Erect Boundaries.
Without proper boundaries, work will take over. Take time to determine what boundaries you need to honor in order to maintain a healthy balance. Maybe you decide missing your yoga practice Tuesday evening is completely unacceptable. Perhaps you determine replying to email over the weekend is off limits. When you notice you’re energy is running low, you likely need to introduce a new boundary—or to respect an existing one you’re ignoring.
Slow Down.
Stimulus—response. Stimulus—response. Stimulus—response. We often find ourselves in this pattern. And when you get overloaded, the response time only hastens. Consider these more effective responses to stimulus triggers: Think. Slow down & remember that 80% of your results come from 20% of your efforts. Clarify. The antidote to confusion is clarity. Stop & ask questions to clarify the outcome you truly desire. Simplify. Break up overwhelming projects into digestible tasks. Eliminate. Think about reasons you should not do something or legitimate ways you can avoid doing it. Shut down. If things are totally out of control, take the most counterintuitive action of all. Shut down & make getting organized your highest priority.
